He lauded Mirundi as a man who left an indelible mark on Uganda’s media and political landscape.
Kampala: President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has paid tribute to the late Joseph Tamale Mirundi, recognizing his significant role in promoting the National Resistance Movement (NRM) through media. Mirundi, a former Presidential Press Secretary and well-known political analyst, passed away on August 13, 2024.
In a message delivered by Haji Faruk Kirunda, Special Presidential Assistant on Press and Mobilization, during a memorial mass at St. Gyaviira Catholic Parish in Bunamwaya, President Museveni described Mirundi as a “good cadre and strategic communicator.” He urged Mirundi’s children and grandchildren to continue his legacy.
President Museveni contributed Shs30 million towards the memorial event and commended the family for their dedication in preserving Mirundi’s legacy. He also appreciated the Church and Mirundi’s colleagues for their continued support.
During the event, Haji Kirunda advised the late Mirundi’s children to remain united and consider forming a SACCO, promising government backing. He also launched the construction of Mirundi Media Plaza, a Shs1 billion project, pledging 300 bags of cement on behalf of his family. He noted that President Museveni supported Mirundi’s earlier plan to establish a printery and would soon visit the family officially.
Political commentator Frank Gashumba, a close friend of the late, praised Mirundi’s loyalty despite occasional disagreements and pledged 100 bags of cement for the Media Plaza.
John Ssali Mirundi, the elder brother of the deceased, thanked President Museveni for supporting the family during Mirundi’s illness and encouraged the family to maintain unity. He also announced that ties had been mended with the Buganda Kingdom, which previously had tensions with the late Mirundi.
On behalf of the children, Ms. Teddy Nantongo expressed gratitude to the President and unveiled plans to build Mirundi Media Plaza in Mpambire along Masaka Road.
