Church of Uganda breaks silence on election of Busoga Bishop

The Church called upon Christians to remain steadfast in prayer, united in faith, and patient as the legitimate election process unfolds.

Busoga: The Church of Uganda has firmly dismissed social media reports falsely claiming that a Bishop has been elected for the Diocese of Busoga.

In a press release dated August 4, 2025, the Provincial Secretary, Rev. Canon William Ongeng, categorically stated that no such election has taken place.

“No election of a Bishop has taken place in the Busoga Diocese. The information being disseminated is utterly false and should be disregarded with the contempt it deserves,” Rev. Canon Ongeng stated.

He emphasized that the Church adheres to a sacred, transparent, and canonical process for electing Bishops one rooted in prayer, discernment, and good governance.

The Bishop election process begins with the official declaration of a vacancy in a diocese. The Provincial Chancellor, in consultation with the House of Bishops, then appoints a Nominations Committee composed of spiritually mature clergy and laity. This committee carefully vets and nominates candidates based on their spiritual maturity, theological soundness, and pastoral competence.

The House of Bishops, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, elects a Bishop from among the nominated candidates. Once a decision is made, the name of the Bishop-elect is publicly announced through the Church’s official communication channels.

Rev. Canon Ongeng urged the public, especially the faithful in Busoga Diocese, to remain calm and avoid sharing unverified information, which he warned could create confusion and division within the Church.

“An official announcement will be made through authorized Church platforms once the election has occurred and the Bishop-elect has been confirmed,” he assured.

The Church called upon Christians to remain steadfast in prayer, united in faith, and patient as the legitimate election process unfolds.

The Church of Uganda reiterated its commitment to upholding a fair, Spirit-led, and transparent process that reflects the integrity and mission of the Anglican faith.
