Six arrested ahead of NRM Mayoral elections in Jinja
“Uganda is a democratic country. Leaders are free to contest without intimidation or violence,” Mr. Kasonzi emphasized.
Jinja: Tensions reached a boiling point in Loco Village, Southern Division, Jinja City, as violence broke out between rival camps during the NRM mayoral primaries campaigns on Monday evening.
The incident, which occurred around 5:00 PM, involved supporters of Mr. Faruwa Kitakule and Mr. Rogers Egesa Anjoga both candidates vying for the Jinja City Southern Division mayoral seat. Witnesses allege that Kitakule’s supporters attacked Anjoga’s campaign team during a door-to-door canvassing drive, resulting in chaos and injury.
According to SP James Mubi, the Kiira Region Police Spokesperson, a joint security team was swiftly deployed and managed to quell the escalating violence. Thirteen individuals were injured in the clashes and are currently receiving treatment at Jinja Main Hospital.
Authorities have arrested six suspects in connection with the unrest. They face charges including assault and malicious damage to property.
Police confirmed that a Tuk Tuk was set ablaze during the altercation, and a motor vehicle sustained significant damage after its windshields were smashed.
In response to the incident, SSP Charles Nsaba, the Regional Police Commander (RPC) for Kiira Region, has called for a harmonization meeting involving both candidates and their supporters. The aim is to restore calm and ensure peaceful conduct ahead of Thursday’s NRM primary elections.
Mr. Martin Kasonzi, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Jinja Southern Division, strongly condemned the violence. He urged all political actors to respect democratic values and refrain from incitement.
“Uganda is a democratic country. Leaders are free to contest without intimidation or violence,” Mr. Kasonzi emphasized.
The clash reportedly broke out as both groups were winding down their campaign rallies in the same area and unexpectedly crossed paths triggering the violent confrontation.
With the primaries just days away, local authorities are appealing for restraint and respect for the rule of law.
