Former presidential candidate’s wife joins race for Kiryandongo District Woman MP Seat
“I bring not just passion, but a track record of leadership and a vision for development. Kiryandongo deserves better, and I am ready to deliver,” she said.
Kiryandongo: Joy Biraaro, the widow of the late former presidential candidate Gen. Benon Biraaro, has declared her intention to contest for the Kiryandongo District Woman Member of Parliament seat in the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Biraaro is seeking the seat on the National Resistance Movement (NRM) ticket, joining a growing list of five other contenders.
Speaking to residents, Joy Biraaro said she believes she is the most qualified candidate due to her experience, exposure, and strong commitment to transforming Kiryandongo into a more developed and economically empowered district.
“I bring not just passion, but a track record of leadership and a vision for development. Kiryandongo deserves better, and I am ready to deliver,” she said.
Among her top priorities is addressing the land grabbing crisis that has plagued the district. She emphasized the need for a leader who is willing to stand firm against land-related corruption and restore the protection of human rights.
She also pointed out the challenge of teenage pregnancy, which she attributes in part to the district being a refugee-hosting area, calling for urgent interventions in education, health, and youth empowerment.
Bernard Mugisa, a resident of Kiryandongo, said the district needs a representative who will prioritize youth unemployment, which remains one of the biggest challenges in the region.
Joel Biraaro, her campaign manager, added that their manifesto has a comprehensive plan to address land disputes, youth empowerment, education, and other community needs.
Joy Biraaro’s entry into the political arena adds a new dynamic to the Kiryandongo Woman MP race, with voters keen to see if her late husband’s national legacy and her local engagement can propel her to Parliament.
