NRM acknowledges petition over Kitgum chairperson elections

These claims have sparked fresh dialogue on the fairness and transparency of internal party elections.

Kitgum: In a significant development within the National Resistance Movement (NRM), Secretary General Richard Todwong and Electoral Chairman Dr. Tanga Odoi have formally acknowledged a petition submitted by Oryem Charles Olweny, a former aspirant in the recent Kitgum District chairperson elections.

Oryem’s petition raises serious concerns over the electoral process, citing voter disenfranchisement, obstruction of his supporters, and irregularities surrounding voting hours. These claims have sparked fresh dialogue on the fairness and transparency of internal party elections.

In response, Enoch Barata, the NRM’s Director of Legal Affairs, welcomed the petition and committed to addressing the grievances by June 4, 2025. Barata emphasized that the party remains committed to its democratic principles and ensuring inclusive participation of its members.

“The petition has been positively received, and we are engaging with all relevant stakeholders to ensure a fair resolution. The party values internal democracy and accountability,” Barata stated.

Oryem clarified that his petition is not a challenge to the victory of Emmanuel Lapyem, the newly elected chairperson. Instead, he described it as a constructive initiative aimed at strengthening internal unity and fostering open dialogue within the party.

“This is not about rejecting results, but about advocating for a better process,” Oryem said. “My goal is to highlight the challenges faced by voters and supporters and to ensure the voices of Kitgum residents are heard and respected.”

Oryem’s appeal reflects a broader vision to revitalize the NRM in Kitgum by enhancing its effectiveness and credibility. His call for collaboration seeks to encourage stronger intra-party communication and a more responsive leadership structure.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Lapyem, who secured the chairmanship, has officially begun his leadership tenure. His first engagement involved participation in a capacity-building workshop organized by the Parliament of Uganda, signaling a proactive start to his role and commitment to strengthening political governance in the district.

This petition and the party’s response are expected to shape future discussions about internal electoral reforms and the evolving democratic culture within the NRM.
