Lightning strikes houses in Masindi, sparks fire

"I've lost almost everything, but I’m thankful that no one was hurt," Wamani added.

Masindi: Residents of Kyakasozi Cell in Bigando Ward, Kigulya Division, were left in shock when lightning struck two grass-thatched houses, igniting a fire.

The incident occurred on Wednesday April 23, 2025 around 12:00 PM during a heavy downpour.

One of the victims, Steven Wamani, described the terrifying sequence of events. “It started raining while we were in the garden. Lightning struck, and when we reached home, we found the house on fire,” he told our reporter.

Wamani, who has five children, revealed that he lost 600,000 shillings in cash and items worth an estimated 2,000,000 shillings. Despite the devastation, he was grateful there were no casualties.

“I’ve lost almost everything, but I’m thankful that no one was hurt,” Wamani added.

Johnson Aliga, the LC1 Chairperson for the area, confirmed the incident and expressed his concern for Wamani’s loss. He called for community and leadership support to assist the affected family.

As of the time of reporting, Wamani was in the process of setting up a temporary shelter to provide for his family.
