Fearless thugs break into Kyegegwa SACCO, steal millions

Despite the extensive efforts, early searches yielded no positive leads.

Kyegegwa: Unidentified assailants in the early hours of Friday morning, April 18, 2025, broke into the newly constructed headquarters of Mpara Sida Sacco in Mpara Town Council, Kyegegwa District, making away with an unspecified sum of money estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of Uganda Shillings.

Initial reports indicate that the assailants also made off with a firearm belonging to Byaruhanga Peter, a security guard attached to Veteran Security Company, Ruhama. Byaruhanga had been deployed to guard the facility at the time of the incident.

Following the reports of the stolen firearm, officers from Kyegegwa Central Police Station, led by District Police Commander Atai Christine, swiftly arrived at the scene.

A search operation, supported by a police K9 unit from neighboring Kyenjojo District, was launched. Despite the extensive efforts, early searches yielded no positive leads.

However, after hours of investigation, officers were able to locate the missing firearm hidden inside one of the offices, providing a moment of relief to the security team.

DPC Atai Christine confirmed the arrest of Byaruhanga Peter and his coworker, identified only as Lodgers, to assist with the ongoing investigation.

While the exact amount of money stolen is yet to be confirmed, a source close to the Sacco’s administration, speaking on condition of anonymity, estimated the stolen funds to exceed UGX 100 million.

While in police custody at Mpara Police Station before being transferred to Kyegegwa Central Police Station, Byaruhanga recounted that he had reported for duty on Thursday, April 17, at around 5:00 PM. According to his statement, his colleague received a call around 7:00 PM about a family emergency and left to attend to his sick children, leaving Byaruhanga alone on guard duty.

He suspects the robbery took place around 4:00 AM on Friday morning, admitting that he was deeply asleep at the time due to the ongoing rain.

Speaking to the press, Mpara Sida Sacco Manager Kategaya Pauline, whose institution has been in operation since the 1990s and currently boasts over 3,500 members, could not confirm the exact amount stolen.

However, she reassured Sacco members that the majority of their funds are safely held in banks or distributed in member loans.

Police investigations are ongoing as authorities continue to pursue leads to identify and apprehend the perpetrators.
