Masindi journalists attacked, robbed

Masindi: Two journalists from Radio7 Uganda in Masindi, Bosco Wakhiti and Andy Bukenya, were attacked and robbed on Saturday night while on their way home.
Wakhiti was attacked at around 10 PM as he was heading home from town to Kihande 2 Cell. He explained that three men on a motorcycle approached him, kicked him from behind, and stole his smartphone and Shs 300,000 in cash.
Wakhiti, who is now recovering from injuries, said that after robbing him, the attackers and fled the scene. He has called on ecurity to carry out monthly operations, citing numerous incidents of robbery both in the town and its outskirts.
In a separate incident, Bukenya was nearly robbed between 11 PM and midnight as he was returning to town. He had just completed a show where he had been hired as a master of ceremonies.
A man who appeared to be a boda boda rider approached Bukenya, offering a lift. However, Bukenya declined, explaining that he had already arranged for his boda boda.
When the rider insisted, another man emerged from behind with a hammer, kicked Bukenya to the ground, and a scuffle ensued. Bukenya was assisted by another boda boda rider heading to Kirasa Cell, which caused the attackers to flee. Unfortunately, Bukenya lost his phone in the process.
In response to the growing concern over increasing criminal activity in the district, police launched an operation on Sunday, arresting 103 suspected criminals.
Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed that 103 individuals were detained, 86 of whom were men and 17 women.
Seventy-five of the suspects were released after being cautioned, while the women (mostly barmaids) were released unconditionally.
The remaining 28 suspects are still in custody for further screening and investigation. Hakiza says those who remain in detention will face charges of common nuisance, as investigations continue into their involvement in criminal activities.
