Rev. Canon Kugonza elected Bishop of Masindi Kitara Diocese
Following a thorough selection process, Rev. Canon Kugonza Joshua emerged as the chosen leader to shepherd the diocese into its next chapter.

Masindi: The House of Bishops of the Church of Uganda, convening at Zebra Hotel in Masaka City on 30th March 2025, has elected Rev. Canon Kugonza Joshua as the 3rd Bishop of Masindi Kitara Diocese.
He will be consecrated and enthroned as Bishop on 3rd August 2025 at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, Masindi.
Born on 7th October 1976 in Kiryandongo District, Rev. Canon Kugonza Joshua gave his life to Christ on 13th September 1989 at Alwala Church of Uganda in Apac District, West Lango Diocese.
His ministerial journey began with his ordination as a Deacon on 3rd January 2010, followed by his Priesting on 14th December 2010 at St. Matthew’s Cathedral, Masindi. He was later elevated to the office of Canon at the same cathedral.
Rev. Canon Kugonza is married to Mrs. Proscovia Allen Kugonza, and together they are blessed with four children.
Currently serving as the Diocesan Secretary of Masindi Kitara Diocese since 2021, he has previously held various roles, including Parish Priest, Project Officer with Samaritan’s Purse, Headteacher and Teacher at Kigumba Intensive Primary School
He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Divinity from Uganda Christian University and a Diploma in Education from National Teachers College, Ngetta (Lira District), along with several other professional qualifications.
Succession Process
The Masindi Kitara Diocese initiated the process of selecting a new bishop in October 2024, as Bishop George William Kasangaki prepares to retire in August 2025 upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
A 15-member nomination committee, chaired by Diocesan Chancellor George Kunihira, was tasked with vetting candidates for the position. Following a thorough selection process, Rev. Canon Kugonza Joshua emerged as the chosen leader to shepherd the diocese into its next chapter.
