Jinja: In a tragic incident, a boda boda rider identified as Edirisa Isabirye, aged around 25 years, committed suicide after allegedly setting his wife, Mirambu Kakai (Mama Namunana), aged between 17 and 19 years, and their 9-month-old baby on fire, killing them on the spot.
The horrific incident occurred at Katende Triangle Ward, Jinja Northern Division, Bugembe Town Council, in Jinja City between 5 PM and midnight on Tuesday.
Kisambira Muhammad, the landlord of the deceased, revealed that Isabirye had been struggling to pay rent for over three months. He added that the tragedy unfolded after a heated misunderstanding between the couple.
Rajab Kasule, the defense representative of Katende Triangle Ward, urged men to work hard and seek guidance from elders when facing challenges at home. He also advised young women to marry at the right age to avoid domestic conflicts.
According to SP James Mubi, the Kiira Region Police Spokesperson, preliminary investigations suggest that the couple had a toxic relationship characterized by constant arguments, violence, and controlling behavior.
Mubi emphasized the need for couples to embrace mutual respect, trust, and honest communication in their relationships.
He also urged people to recognize early warning signs of toxic marriages and make informed decisions, including seeking professional counseling or leaving life-threatening relationships.
Authorities and community leaders have called on families, religious institutions, and mental health professionals to intervene early in troubled relationships to prevent similar tragedies.
