Residents expressed outrage over the shooting, arguing that the student was an innocent victim.

Kaliro: Police in Kaliro District have arrested a police officer, Sgt. Kyakwise Charles, to aid investigations into the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old student.
The deceased, identified as Mudago Sogo, was a student at Kaliro Vocational Secondary School. The incident occurred on March 8, 2025, at Kyani, Bumanya Sub-County.
According to initial reports, a cattle theft case was reported by Mutebi Godfrey, a resident of Kananzoki village, after three bulls were stolen by an unknown suspect.
Police officers deployed a sniffer dog, which led them to a bar, where it traced the scent to Zigondo Bosco Pande, a known habitual thief.
As officers attempted to apprehend Zigondo, a rowdy crowd gathered, demanding mob justice. Some started pelting stones at the police officers.
ASP Michael Kasadha stated that in an effort to calm the situation, the officers remained inside the building with the suspect. However, as the scuffle escalated, Sgt. Kyakwise Charles discharged his firearm, fatally shooting Mudago Sogo.
The victim succumbed to his injuries while being transported to the hospital. His body was later taken to Bumanya Health Centre IV mortuary for a postmortem.
Residents expressed outrage over the shooting, arguing that the student was an innocent victim.
“We only wanted the thief to be beaten because cattle theft has become rampant in Kaliro,” said one resident who preferred to remain anonymous.
Meanwhile, police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting.
