Properties lost as fire guts warehouse in Jinja City

The full extent of the damage is yet to be determined as authorities continue their assessment.

Jinja: A fire broke out at a warehouse in Jinja City along Eng. Zikusoka Road (formerly Obote Way) at around 2:30 PM on Tuesday, destroying properties and goods worth millions of shillings.

According to eyewitnesses, the exact cause of the fire remains unclear, but it is suspected that electrical sparks from welding activities inside the warehouse may have triggered the blaze.

The regional fire officer, SP Manisulu Isabirye, swiftly deployed fire trucks and a dedicated crew to contain the fire. External stakeholders, including TASO, GM Sugar Limited, and Nytil, also provided support in the firefighting efforts.

SP James Mubi, the Kiira Region police spokesperson, commended the firefighters for their prompt response, which prevented the flames from spreading to nearby structures, including the UNOC oil tanks.

Fortunately, no lives were lost, no injuries were reported, and no vehicles were damaged, despite the warehouse also serving as a parking yard.

Residents expressed gratitude to the police for their quick intervention. RPC Kiira Region SSP Charles Nsaba, R/CID officer D/SSP Monday Johnson Agaba, and other senior officials were present at the scene to oversee operations and provide strategic direction.

Mubi stated that investigations into the cause of the fire are still ongoing. Meanwhile, police have urged the City’s Building Control Committee (BCC) to include the regional fire officer in its planning efforts to enhance fire safety and emergency preparedness in Jinja City.

The full extent of the damage is yet to be determined as authorities continue their assessment.
