Buliisa: The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Buliisa, Longino Byagagaire Bahebwa, has once again imposed a ban on the scrap business due to rampant theft, including the vandalism of road signs.
In an interview on Thursday evening, Bahebwa revealed that several road signs, particularly at high-risk locations such as River Waaki, Waiga, the escarpment area, and other parts of the district, have been stolen by criminals and sold to scrap dealers.
He stated that this act of vandalism has significantly contributed to numerous road accidents.
Bahebwa criticized scrap dealers for knowingly purchasing stolen road signposts, prompting authorities to take immediate action against them.
He further disclosed that an investigation has been launched to identify and apprehend individuals involved in the theft and sale of vandalized road signs.
The RDC urged the public to safeguard road signs, emphasizing their importance in ensuring road safety. He reminded road users that these signs are erected to warn and guide them, preventing accidents.
This is not the first time Bahebwa has taken a strong stance on the matter. Last year, he warned that the scrap business could be banned if theft and vandalism persisted.
According to him, scrap collectors continue to sell stolen road signs to dealers, worsening the situation. He remains hopeful that the ban will help curb these illegal activities.
“It is unfortunate that people are vandalizing road signs, which has led to an increase in road accidents in the district,” Bahebwa stated.
