Women arrested for staging child kidnapping for ransom
He assured the public that the suspects would face the full force of the law, adding that further investigations are ongoing.
Kampala: The Kampala Metropolitan Police have arrested two individuals in connection with a staged child kidnapping intended to extort money from the victim’s father.
On January 26, 2025, police in Nateete received a report of the alleged abduction of a 7-year-old girl. The suspect demanded a ransom of Shs 5,000,000 from the child’s father, prompting police to launch an immediate investigation.
A team of intelligence officers and detectives traced the suspect’s location to Kasenge Nakawuka, near the victim’s home. During a phone call from the suspect, the child was heard crying and pleading for rescue, claiming her captors had threatened to kill her.
According to SSP Patrick Onyango, Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, investigations revealed that the suspect had contacted both the victim’s father and mother before demanding the ransom. Acting on intelligence, the police located the child near her mother’s workplace, alive and unharmed.
The investigation further uncovered a shocking twist: the kidnapping had been staged by the victim’s own mother, Nagadya Teo, and her 20-year-old daughter, Namukwaya Winnie.
The duo used artificial intelligence (AI) technology to disguise their voices, making it appear as though a man was issuing the ransom demands.
Police recovered a Tecno phone and a SIM card used to contact the victim’s father. Both Nagadya and Namukwaya were arrested and are facing charges of conspiracy and extortion. Authorities are also tracking down the individual who sold the registered SIM card used in the scheme.
SSP Onyango confirmed that the operation was conducted successfully, with no casualties reported. He assured the public that the suspects would face the full force of the law, adding that further investigations are ongoing.
