Hoima security guard loses gun to thieves

Efforts to recover the stolen firearm and apprehend the culprits are ongoing.

Hoima: Police in Hoima District are investigating the theft of a firearm from Geoffrey Byaruhanga, a 47-year-old security guard, under unclear circumstances.

Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, told journalists on Monday that the incident occurred on January 26, 2025, at around 3:30 PM. Unknown assailants reportedly struck Byaruhanga on the head and fled with the firearm.

Byaruhanga had been deployed to guard shops along Fort Portal Road, opposite Hoima Fuel Station. “Byaruhanga was deployed to guard the shops along Fort Portal Road, opposite Hoima Fuel Station,” Hakiza confirmed.

Police were informed of the incident at approximately 4:30 AM, after which officers promptly visited the scene, documented evidence, and began efforts to track the assailants and recover the stolen gun.

Hakiza also revealed that Byaruhanga has been arrested to assist in the investigation. “We have Byaruhanga in our custody to aid the investigation since he is both a victim and a suspect at the same time,” he stated.
