Rukungiri: Police in Rukungiri district have arrested Generous Ainembabazi, 19, in connection with the murder of her two-week-old baby boy.
Police are also hunting for her accomplice and her husband, Godfrey Twongyirwe, who is currently on the run.
It’s alleged that Ainembabazi, a resident of Kyahi village, Karuhembe Parish, Kebisoni sub-county, Rukungiri district, fell in love with Twongirwe and conceived.
Twongyirwe, having realized that his girlfriend was pregnant, took her to stay with his parents at Makiro Village, Mabanga Parish, in Kebisoni sub-county, where she delivered a baby boy on December 22, 2023.
Allegations further indicated that Kellen Asiimwe, the mother of Twongyirwe, came up with information indicating that the baby wasn’t their blood, and this eventually led to chasing Ainembabazi from her home on January 7, 2024.
A few moments later, Ainembabazi found her husband at the home of Mbyemire John Bosco in Kyahi village, where he was working and staying.
She stayed with her baby until around 9:00 p.m., when Twongyirwe picked it up and dumped it in an abandoned latrine belonging to Machati Prutazi of Kyahi village.
On January 9, 2024, at around 7:00 a.m., Mbyemire asked for the whereabouts of the child, and when Ainembabazi opened up, he reported the matter at Mabanga Police Post for further management.
The scene was promptly visited, examined, and documented by the police officers.
The body was retrieved and conveyed to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for a postmortem to ascertain the actual cause of the death, and Ainembabazi was handed over to the police by the public, who had arrested her, as Twongyirwe remains at large.
ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and revealed that inquiries into the matter are at hand.
