Oyam: Oyam Institute of Sciences and Technology (OIST) is located along the Minakulu Gulu Highway in Oyam district.
The institution offers health courses such as clinical medicine, pharmacy, medical records, laboratory and technology, guidance, and counseling, both at the certificate and diploma level.
The engineering courses include biomedical engineering, electrical installation, system maintenance, electronic technology, public health technology building and construction, journalism and mass communication, and certified accounting.
Eng. Emmanuel Ogwang, the institution’s managing director, says the strategic location of the institute next to various health facilities, which, among others, include the Gulu regional referral hospital, Oyam health centers II and III, and Kiryandongo hospital, has given the students vast opportunities for practice.
He adds that the experienced instructors at the institute have provided the students with the best skills and competencies that he believes will aid in real-life projects and community engagement.
Students who spoke to this publication expressed joy after joining the institution, asserting that they would achieve their dreams.
Joel Niwah, a student of biomedical engineering, says he wanted a course that would combine medical and engineering.
‘’I searched on the internet and identified the course at Oyam Institute of Sciences and Technology, from where I have achieved much, and now I hope to achieve a PhD and also innovate my own software.’’
Emmanuel Oloja, another student of biomedical engineering, says that after he discovered that many medical machines in Soroti were being dumped after breakdowns, he therefore opted to join the institution in order to acquire skills that will help him rectify the errors on the machines and avoid dumping them.
According to Emmanuel Agany and Ceaser Franco Okuga, both students of biomedical engineering, they joined the institute due to its affordable tuition and the national service scheme, which offers them the opportunity to practice their learned knowledge.
Currently, medical students from Oyam Institute of Sciences and Technology are doing their internship at Gulu Regional Referral Hospital and other government health facilities.
