VP Alupo commends St. Ignatius University for advancing hands-on education

She highlighted this approach as crucial for advancing Uganda towards achieving middle-income status.

Kabale: Her Excellency, Retired Maj. Gen. Jessica Alupo, Vice President of the Republic of Uganda, has praised the newly inaugurated St. Ignatius University for its emphasis on hands-on projects.

Maj. Gen. Alupo conveyed these sentiments in a speech delivered on her behalf by the Minister for Tourism, Col. Tom Butiime, who represented her at the university’s inauguration ceremony, which also marked the installation of the first university Chancellor and Vice Chancellor.

The colorful ceremony took place on Saturday, August 24, 2024, at the University Grounds in Southern Division, Kabale Municipality.

She highlighted this approach as crucial for advancing Uganda towards achieving middle-income status.

Col. Butiime noted that the focus on practical projects would foster innovation and creativity among students, aligning with the university’s mission to secure a bright future for its graduates.

In her speech, the Vice President further urged the university’s stakeholders to prioritize industrialization and value addition. She also pledged ongoing support and collaboration between the Government of Uganda and St. Ignatius University.

Addressing the audience, the newly installed Chancellor, Rt. Rev. Callist Rubaramira, who is also the Bishop of Kabale Diocese, alongside the new Vice Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Associate Professor Maxmilliano Ngabirano, emphasized the importance of hands-on projects and courses.

They emphasized agriculture and tourism studies as essential to addressing the high unemployment rates among youth graduating from various universities and higher learning institutions in Uganda today.

St. Ignatius University, which received its license to operate as a private university on August 31, 2023, opened its first semester on January 8, 2024.

The university currently enrolls 170 students and offers eight fully accredited programs, along with UBTEB vocational courses.
