UPDF soldier shoots civilian dead in Nebbi

Nebbi: Police in Nebbi District are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting of a civilian by a Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) soldier.
The incident occurred on Monday, October 28, 2024, in Patong Village, Ayomu Parish, Jupangira Sub-County.
According to Collins Asea, the acting public relations officer for the West Nile region, UPDF soldier PTE Lomer Samuel, assigned to the Goli Customs Border Point, was involved in the shooting of local resident Oyomi Edmond.
A call had been received from a local resident reporting a violent situation, prompting an immediate response from a joint team of police and UPDF personnel.
Upon their arrival, the officers faced resistance from a gathering at the scene. During this confrontation, PTE Lomer Samuel discharged his firearm, resulting in the tragic death of Edmond.
“Our investigative officers, including the District Police Commander and members from CID and SOCO, quickly secured the area and began evidence gathering,” Asea stated.
The case has been officially registered under Goli SD REF 05/28/10/2024, and PTE Lomer Samuel is currently in custody as inquiries continue.
The body of the deceased has been transferred to Nebbi Hospital for a post-mortem examination to assist in the investigation.
