Kagadi: The top UPDF officer at a rank of Major and two others survived being lynched by an angry mob on allegations of cattle theft.
The incident transpired in Kisura trading center, Bwikara Sub County, Kagadi District, in the wee hours of Friday morning between 00:00 a.m. and 3 a.m.
An eyewitness who preferred anonymity told this publication that one person who had a gun was driving a vehicle registration number UAE 722/C, whereas the other two men on foot were chasing two cows coming from Kyaterekera side and were intercepted in Kisura trading center amidst an alarm, which attracted residents in thousands to come witness the purported thieves.
Upon interception, the Kisura village LC1 chairperson was informed and rushed to the scene, where he immediately started interrogating the suspects, and it was realized that one of them who had a gun was a UPDF officer at the rank of Major, something that created fear amongst locals.
This prompted them to alert the police at Bwikara Trading Center, and on arrival, they fired live ammunition in the air to subdue the suspect carrying the gun.
The incident has been confirmed by the RDC for Kagadi, Mrs. Lillian Ruteraho, who identified one of the suspects as Major Andrew, a UPDF officer, whereas the two others their names remained scanty.
RDC Ruteraho said that upon interrogation, the army officer told them that he was coming from his farm in Ndaiga Sub County, from where he picked the cows.
The presidential representative says the suspects were in the wee hours of Friday morning brought to Kagadi central police station, where they are currently detained.
Commissioner Ruteraho has thanked residents of Kisura and greater Bwikara for not taking the law into their own hands to lynch the suspects.
She has, however, cautioned security officers and other government civil servants against misusing their offices and powers, thus condemning the Major Officer for illegally transporting his cows because of the rank he holds.
