Umukuka appeals to striking teachers in Bugisu region to return to class

“Earlier this morning, I sampled several schools and found a high level of compliance, particularly at the secondary level. While a few primary schools may still be affected, most teachers have returned to class.”

Mbale: The Umukuka of the Bamasaaba cultural institution has appealed to all striking teachers in the Bugisu region to return to class and prioritize the education of learners, especially as terminal examinations approach.

Hon. Steven Masiga, the spokesperson of the Bamasaaba cultural institution, told UG Reports that the institution is actively engaging the Government through cultural channels to advocate for salary increments for teachers not only in Bugisu but across the country.

“As culturalists, we are against violent methods of demanding salary increases. We prefer peaceful and respectful engagement,” Masiga stated. “I’m happy to report that when His Highness the Umukuka recently met with some headteachers and teachers, he pleaded with them to return to class and they pledged compliance.”

Masiga emphasized that teachers risk falling afoul of the Public Service Standing Orders, which criminalize prolonged absence from duty without special permission. He urged all teachers to resume work and focus on teaching.

“It is the wish of the cultural leader that all teachers and headteachers prioritize learning over salary demands, especially now as candidates prepare for PLE, O-Level, and UACE exams,” Masiga said.

He added that the cultural institution is not sitting back but playing a supplementary role by engaging the Government to address teachers’ welfare.

“Earlier this morning, I sampled several schools and found a high level of compliance, particularly at the secondary level. While a few primary schools may still be affected, most teachers have returned to class.”

Masiga also commended RDCs, RCCs, and education officers for their efforts in urging teachers to resume duty and encouraging learners to stay in school.
