Zombo: His Majesty Ubimu Phillip Rauni III Ularker, the esteemed King of the Alur Kingdom, has urged the Ugandan government to prioritize critical infrastructure development in the region, citing poor roads and decaying school facilities as key obstacles to progress.

Speaking during the 19th anniversary of his enthronement at Kal Atyak Winam in Zombo District, the monarch emphasized that meaningful development cannot occur without quality education and accessible transport networks.

“Education is the foundation of our future. Yet our children continue to study under crumbling roofs,” said the Ubimu, pointing to the dire condition of King Rauni Primary School, a community-founded institution in Yil area, Anyola Parish, Atyak Sub-county.

The school serves a predominantly agrarian population that faces long distances to access basic education services. His appeal reflects broader community concerns about the state of government-aided schools and infrastructure gaps in Zombo District.

Of particular concern is the 119-kilometre Nebbi–Paidha–Warr–Vurra national road, a vital artery for trade and mobility in the region. Despite multiple government pledges to tarmac the road, it remains in poor condition. A planned peaceful protest led by Padyere MP Isaka Otimgiu was recently blocked by security personnel, intensifying public frustration.

Ubimu Ularker reaffirmed his Kingdom’s support for national development initiatives and called on his people to actively participate in poverty alleviation programs.

“Our Kingdom stands with the government on development. Let us work together to uplift our communities,” he urged.

The enthronement anniversary a major cultural milestone served as a unifying event for the Alur people, offering a platform to promote development, uphold cultural values, and amplify the community’s voice in national affairs.

The celebration was graced by Assistant Commissioner Lucy Oto from the Ministry of Gender, Labour and Social Development, who praised the Alur Kingdom for its commitment to peace, unity, and cultural identity.

“I urge traditional leaders to champion unity and development to lift our people out of poverty,” Oto stated, pledging government collaboration in addressing the region’s challenges.

The event also drew recognition from a Kenyan Luo documentary team, commended by the King for their role in preserving Alur heritage. Their collaboration with local institutions is part of a wider effort to document and protect indigenous knowledge and traditions.

The Prime Minister of Alur Kingdom, Opar Lawrence Angala, used the occasion to deliver an extensive oral history of the Alur people emphasizing the importance of passing on cultural knowledge to younger generations.

The 19th enthronement anniversary not only highlighted the deep-rooted traditions of the Alur but also showcased the Kingdom’s role as an advocate for modern development, infrastructure investment, and regional empowerment.

The intersection of cultural preservation and policy advocacy continues to shape the Kingdom’s influence in Uganda’s evolving socio-political landscape.
