Travellers stranded as UNRA suspends Wanseko-Panyimur Ferry operations

Effective immediately, the Panyimur-Wanseko route will be closed until the ferry is deemed safe for travel.

Buliisa: The Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has temporarily suspended operations of the Wanseko-Panyimur Ferry due to mechanical defects.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, October 29, 2024, UNRA informed the public that the Albert Nile 1 Ferry, which connects Pakwach and Buliisa districts via the Panyimur-Wanseko route, will be out of service for necessary repairs to ensure safe operations.

Effective immediately, the Panyimur-Wanseko route will be closed until the ferry is deemed safe for travel.

Passengers have been advised to use alternative road routes, specifically through Murchison Falls National Park—Masindi—Kampala or Murchison Falls National Park—Buliisa—Hoima—Kampala.

Stranded travellers

On Tuesday, numerous travelers found themselves stranded at the Wanseko ferry dock, hoping to cross to Panyimur in Pakwach District and vice versa.

Gilbert Ongyeritho, one of the stranded passengers, expressed his frustration, noting that many rely on the ferry due to its free service.

Another ferry user, Silvia Adokorach, shared her concerns about using small canoes, citing safety risks during inclement weather.

Gerald Muhumuza, a resident of Wanseko Town Council, observed that some travelers opted to cancel their journeys out of fear of using engine-driven boats, which charge between UGX 5,000 and 10,000.

When contacted, UNRA’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr. Allan Ssempebwa, explained that the ferry had experienced mechanical issues in key components, necessitating urgent maintenance.

He confirmed that the ferry would not be able to operate its scheduled trips until repairs are completed.

Ssempebwa urged passengers to utilize the alternative routes while assuring them that UNRA is working diligently to restore service as quickly as possible.
