Travellers cheat death as bus catches fire in Kiryandongo

This incident comes just 40 days after a deadly Nile Star bus crash on 22nd October this year at Kitaleba in Kiryandongo District along the same highway, which claimed 46 lives.

Kiryandongo: Travellers narrowly escaped death after a bus travelling from Kampala to Arua caught fire along the Kampala–Gulu highway on Tuesday, December 2, 2025.

Eyewitnesses say the front tyre of the Nile Star bus, registration UBF 619T, suddenly came off, forcing the driver to make an emergency stop in the middle of Kiryandongo Town shortly after the road humps. The driver immediately evacuated all passengers, and within moments, the front section of the bus caught fire.

Kiryandongo Town Council Mayor Serunkuma Godfrey, who arrived at the scene, applauded residents and passersby who helped extinguish the fire before the entire bus was engulfed.

He urged motorists to exercise maximum caution, especially during the festive season when road traffic increases significantly.

Serunkuma also appealed to the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) to redesign and correct the humps in Kiryandongo Town so they effectively enforce speed reduction.

He commended the bus driver for his quick thinking, saying his swift action prevented what could have been a major tragedy.

Other eyewitnesses also praised the driver for his composure and careful handling of the situation, noting that a fatal accident had been avoided.
