TRAGEDY! Mother poisons self, two children

“They were in a very bad state. We rushed them to the hospital immediately because if we had delayed even a little, they wouldn’t have made it,” Robert said.

Namayingo: Health workers at Buyinja Health Centre IV are fighting to save the lives of a 22-year-old mother and her two children after a tragic poisoning incident in Namayingo Town Council.

The mother, identified as Beatrice Nandera, reportedly locked herself in a rental room with her two children Noweri Nandera (4) and Emmanuel Wandera (2) and gave them porridge laced with poison. The incident occurred on the evening of January 6, 2025.

According to residents, Nandera’s husband, Mr. Brian Bwire, had left for work in Kenya, leaving her alone with the children. Neighbors claim that the couple’s relationship was troubled and that Nandera may have been driven to despair due to domestic mistreatment and stress.

Reports indicate that neighbors were alerted by the sound of the children coughing and crying. Concerned for their safety, the neighbors broke down the locked door and found the mother and children in a critical condition.

“We heard the children coughing and crying uncontrollably, which prompted us to break in,” said one neighbor.

The victims were rushed to Buyinja Health Centre IV by local boda boda riders, who were called to assist. Robert, one of the riders, explained that any further delay could have cost their lives.

“They were in a very bad state. We rushed them to the hospital immediately because if we had delayed even a little, they wouldn’t have made it,” Robert said.

At the hospital, Dr. Akori Jonan, a nursing officer, confirmed that the mother and children are in critical condition and currently receiving high-volume oxygen.

“They aspirated the poison, which worsened their condition. They are unconscious and in the emergency unit, but we are doing everything possible to save them,” Dr. Akori stated.

The incident has sparked outrage and concern within the community. Kwagala Sumaya, a concerned mother, condemned Nandera’s actions but urged compassion.

“It’s heartbreaking. She should not have taken such a drastic step. There are local leaders and community members who could have offered guidance and help,” Kwagala said.

As investigations into the incident continue, community leaders are calling for more mental health support services and domestic violence awareness to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
