Tourists survive accident as van slide off Kabale-Bunyonyi road

Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the tourists.

Kabale: The Kabale-Bunyonyi road has been in the spotlight recently due to incidents caused by heavy rains.

Tourists traveling along this route on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, faced challenges when a van slid off the muddy section of the road, leaving them stranded for hours.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported among the tourists.

The slippery conditions were attributed to the morning downpour, which affected the recently graded road.

David Muhwezi, a tour guide from Lake Bunyonyi, emphasized the need for urgent government intervention. He called for the fulfillment of President Museveni’s pledge to upgrade the tourism roads.

The Bunyonyi-Kabale road is crucial for tourists exploring the Kigezi sub-region, and its poor condition could negatively impact tourism.

Since 2006, the Ugandan government has promised to tarmac several key roads in the area, including the Katuna-Rubaya-Muko (67km) route and the Kabale-Lake Bunyonyi (15km) road.

Additionally, plans for two ferries on Lake Bunyonyi were part of this commitment.

However, progress has been slow, and urgent action is needed to improve road safety and enhance the overall tourism experience.
