Thousands attend Irene Gleeson Memorial Event

Kitgum: Over 3,000 people are estimated to have attended the 2024 Irene Gleeson Memorial event held at IGF Christian Community Church, Lulojo, on Saturday, July 27th, 2024.

Hon. Nobert Mao, the Minister for Justice and Constitutional Affairs, delivered the keynote speech, recognizing the contributions of Mama Irene Gleeson, whom he termed a true servant of God and a caregiver without boundaries.

He also acknowledged the leadership of the Irene Gleeson Foundation, which has navigated eleven years since her demise in 2013.

John Paul Kiffasi, the IGF Executive Director, revealed that the organization currently operates five schools in Padibe, Palabek, Amida, Nakwanya, and Lulojo, with high enrollments.

He listed various pre-event activities, including a debating competition, a women’s conference, a cycling race, and athletics, among others, where five women champions were awarded for their positive contributions to the region.

Hon. Dr. Aber Lillian, the State Minister of Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees (OPM), and the Kitgum District Woman MP officiated as the chief guests.

She urged the population to follow in the footsteps of Irene Gleeson, who left her country to support the disadvantaged population in the Acholi Subregion.

The politician also encouraged people to practice donating the little they have to support the poor and vulnerable in the region to improve livelihoods.

She emphasized the need for unity and peaceful coexistence among the population in the Acholi Subregion.

The 2024 Irene Gleeson Memorial was based on the theme “Celebrating Women in the Gospel Ministry.”
