TERRIBLE! Son strangles father to death over land dispute
The body of the deceased was taken to Itojo Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Natungamo: Police in Ntungamo District have launched investigations after a man allegedly strangled his father to death following a long-standing land dispute.
The incident occurred in Mutojo Cell, Rwemiriro Ward, Rubaare Town Council in Rushenyi County. The deceased has been identified as Anania Kabarebe, a resident in his 50s, while the prime suspect is his son, Edwin Akandwanaho, also known as Kabukye, a man in his 20s who worked as a car washer in Rubaare.
According to the LC I Chairperson of Mutojo, Mr. Yafesi Arinaitwe, the incident happened on Wednesday at around 9:35 p.m. after the suspect returned home from a drinking spot. Reports indicate that the father and son had been in conflict over land ownership. It is alleged that the deceased had recently sold land without sharing the proceeds with his son, which sparked anger and resentment.
Authorities say the suspect allegedly conspired with a friend, Gerald Byabakama, also known as Kinyindo, 22, to commit the murder. After the incident, the two reportedly attempted to blend in with mourners to avoid suspicion. However, a concerned resident alerted the police, leading to their swift arrest.
Akandwanaho has since been transferred to Ntungamo Central Police Station, while Byabakama remains in custody at Rubaare Police Station. The body of the deceased was taken to Itojo Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
Provia Kobusingye, the widow of the deceased, claims that her son’s actions were influenced by alcohol and drug abuse, in addition to the ongoing land dispute. She noted that the suspect had recently returned from Mbarara and had only been working as a car washer for about two weeks.
Mr. Arinaitwe has urged members of the public to seek guidance from counselors and law enforcement authorities when facing domestic conflicts, rather than resorting to violence.
