Masindi: A suspected thief has been beaten and burned to death by a mob in Kihande 1 cell, central division of Masindi municipality.
The incident happened yesterday at 3 a.m. along Masindi-Hoima Road.
It is alleged that the 29-year-old deceased, who has not been identified by press time, together with another person at large, broke into the home of one Gerald of Kihande 1 cell with the intention of stealing a motorcycle, Bajaj, and pigs.
Sources who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity said the deceased was heard at night breaking into the house where the motorcycle was parked and a colleague was seen in the pig house.
Sources added that Gerald and other family members came out and started engaging the thieves, who had pangs and other instruments.
During the scuffle, two family members were injured and are currently admitted to the main hospital.
They also noted that Gerald and his family made an alarm that scared the thieves who took off but were intercepted by a mob on the main road and burned to death while his alleged accomplice managed to escape.
By press time, the body of the deceased was still at the scene, and police had not yet reached the scene.
Grace Basemera, the LC1 Chairperson for Kihande Cell, condemned the act, stressing that cases of theft are on the rise.
‘’During the festive season we register a surge in theft cases, and the most involved are the youth who don’t want to work,’’ she stressed.
Effort to get comments from police was futile.
On Thursday this week, a suspected motorcycle thief survived being lynched by charged boda boda riders in Masindi town.
The suspect, who couldn’t be identified by press time, was riding a motorcycle number UFL 269J on a TVS drone.
The suspect was pursued from Masindi town to the central police station.
In August this year, angry residents of Kyeema cell in Karujubu division, Masindi district, burned a motorcycle that had been abandoned by suspected thieves in their area.
The thieves, who were traveling on a motorcycle, attempted to steal goats belonging to one of the residents in the area.
Jafari Kyoomya, the area LC1 chairperson, told our reporter that the thieves parked the motorcycle that they had hired from Kyongoyoma village in Pakanyi Sub County along Masindi-Kigumba road and went to steal the goats.
However, Kyoomya revealed that their plan was foiled by the residents, forcing them to flee and abandon the TVS motorcycle registration number UGF 779B, which the residents later set ablaze, burning beyond recognition.
He added that the motorcycle was later taken by police at Masindi station.
The chairperson noted that this was the second motorcycle to be abandoned in the area by thieves this month.
