Suspected arsonists torch catechist’s house in Arua
Local authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation.
Arua: On the early morning of November 16, 2024, a fire was deliberately set to the home of Mr. Ondua Augustino, a 59-year-old Catechist at St. Paul Koo Catholic Church in Arua City.
The arson attack occurred at approximately 1:00 am in Koo Cell, Yivu Ward, while Mr. Ondua was inside his residence. Thankfully, he managed to escape unharmed, although his belongings and some church equipment were destroyed in the blaze.
Collins Asea, Police Spokesperson for the West Nile Region, stated that the incident appears to be linked to a long-standing land dispute between St. Paul Koo Catholic Church and the family of Mr. Ayikobua Peter and Ms. Betty Nyokaru.
According to Asea, the dispute centers around land near the church premises, which Mr. Ondua had begun cultivating. This has reportedly led to threats from the opposing family, urging him to stop his activities on the contested land.
“The matter is currently under judicial review and nearing resolution,” Asea confirmed, adding that the investigation into the arson is ongoing. The police are working to identify the individuals responsible for the attack.
Local authorities are appealing to the public for any information that could assist in the investigation. Community members with knowledge of the incident are encouraged to come forward and aid the authorities in bringing those responsible to justice.
‘’For further inquiries or to provide tips, the Uganda Police Force can be contacted through their official channels,’’ Asea noted.
