Police from Kagadi Central Police Station retrieved Sunday’s body and conveyed it to Kagadi Hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.

Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine police spokesperson, has confirmed the incident, adding that investigations are underway to determine the circumstances surrounding Sunday’s death.

In September this year, a suspect committed suicide in the police cell of Kabasekende Police Post.

The deceased was identified as Peter Musinguzi, 30 years old, a resident of Kigoro Village, Kabasekende Parish, Kabasekende Sub County in Kibaale district.

On July 27, 2024, the deceased was given money amounting to Shs2.5 million by a woman only identified as Jude.

After receiving the above amount of money, the deceased instead ran to Kiboga district, which prompted the owner of the money, Ziah Bwambale, to contact him through his known contact number, which was unavailable.

The suspect was arrested from Kiboga by police officers from Kabasekende.

After his arrest, the suspect was detained at the Kabasekende police cell, where he hanged himself to death using his shirt from the cells between the nights of 13th and 14th of this month.’’

On the 4th of this month, panic gripped police officers at Masindi Central Police Station after a suspect died from the cells.

The suspect, identified as a 37-year-old Patrick Mujuni, was from Kijunjubwa cell in Kijunjubwa town council Masindi district.

The suspect was arrested on allegations of assault and robbery. He died the next morning.

Paul Tinkamanyire mentioned that his brother Mujuni had a dispute with a customer over money, which escalated into a fight.

Tinkamanyire added that Mujuni, who was operating a small bar and butchery, was arrested on Sunday last week by the officer in charge of the Kijunjubwa Police post, Peter Lokinomoi.

He alleged that his brother was severely beaten by Lokinomoi, potentially contributing to his death.

Tinkamanyire added that Mujuni had been charged with robbery and assault, noting that they tried to pursue the police bond in vain.

Despite efforts to secure a police bond and transfer Mujuni to a central police station, these attempts were unsuccessful, and Mujuni’s condition worsened before he was eventually transferred.

On the other hand, Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine region police spokesperson, confirmed that Mujune died from police custody and stated that Mujuni suspected to have committed suicide while in custody.

Mujuni’s body was taken to Masindi General Hospital for a postmortem, to provide more clarity on the cause of death.

In a similar incident, on the 16th of this month, the Gulu City East Police Division reported a case of suspected suicide on October 12, 2024. The deceased, identified as Opio Felix, was found dead in Cubu Cell, Tee Gwana Ward, Laroo Pece Division.
