Speaker Among’s election reflects Uganda’s increasing influence in regional parliamentary diplomacy.

Accra: The Speaker of Parliament of Uganda, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among, has been unanimously elected as the Vice Chairperson of the Forum of African Speakers and Presidents of Legislatures during the 2nd General Assembly of the Conference of Speakers and Presidents of African Legislatures (COSPAL) in Accra, Ghana.

This election highlights the pressing need for unity and regional cooperation to advance Africa’s development.

Hosted by Ghana’s Speaker, Rt. Hon. Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the assembly gathered parliamentary leaders from across the continent to address shared challenges such as poverty, unemployment, political instability, and climate change. Emphasizing better governance and resource management, discussions aimed at sustainable solutions for these issues.

In her address, Speaker Among stressed the critical importance of African unity in tackling these challenges.

“To address Africa’s issues, we need united efforts and shared solutions. Our focus should shift toward unlocking our resources and empowering our people, rather than relying on external aid,” she asserted.

Newly elected Chairperson Bagbin urged legislatures to actively engage in advancing Africa’s development agenda. “As representatives, we cannot remain passive. Legislatures must lead initiatives that address Africa’s challenges and meet the needs of our citizens,” he stated.

The assembly underscored that sustainable development hinges on effectively managing Africa’s natural and human resources, advocating for reduced dependence on foreign assistance.

It also called for enhanced cross-border cooperation in economic integration, governance, and infrastructure development.

Speaker Bagbin further encouraged legislative leaders to implement policies that promote economic resilience, inclusive growth, and human capital development, ensuring that Africa’s wealth directly benefits its people.

Speaker Among’s election reflects Uganda’s increasing influence in regional parliamentary diplomacy and reinforces the commitment to unity and collaborative solutions for sustainable development across the continent.
