Security sets strict measures to curb cattle raids in Kitgum
The army successfully recovered 8 out of 18 cattle that had been raided on Sunday, April 13, after pursuing the rustlers to Kacheri in the Karamoja subregion.
Kitgum: The security committee of Kitgum District has instituted strict measures to address the persistent cattle raids allegedly carried out by Karamojong and South Sudanese rustlers.
According to Mr. Oguti Geoffrey, the Kitgum District Assistant RDC in charge of Chua East Constituency, the resolutions were reached during a joint security meeting held on Thursday, April 17, 2025, in Orom Subcounty.
The meeting involved local leadership from Greater Orom and Namokora.
Commissioner Oguti noted that the meeting aimed to strengthen cooperation between local leaders and the army, explore the reasons behind the frequent raids in Chua East, address delayed reporting of such incidents to security authorities, and understand what motivates the rustlers in the region.
He stated that key resolutions from the meeting included; the creation of protected community kraals, establishment of new army detaches in areas commonly used by rustlers to infiltrate the district, immediate relocation of all cattle to the protected community kraals and prioritizing the channelling of security information to the nearest army detachments before informing other authorities.
The meeting was attended by the 505 Brigade Commander, Intelligence Officers, administrators, commanders of the 73rd, 75th, and 77th battalions, as well as local leaders from Greater Namokora and Orom and other security officials from Kitgum.
