Security foils planned demonstration in Arua City

While some youth criticized the security measures, others appealed to the forces to join the fight against corruption.

Arua:  Arua City was on high alert as joint police and Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF) soldiers deployed heavily to stop a planned demonstration by youth.

The group of youths, who referred to themselves as Gen-Z, had intended to march to Arua city council offices located along Avenue Road in Arua central division.

Their purpose was to express grievances over corruption in the country. By 6 am, the joint security forces had surrounded the council offices and routes leading to other public offices, including the Resident City Commissioner and Arua Central Police station headquarters.

Individuals seeking access to offices underwent thorough security checks, while others were turned away.

Josephine Angucia, the West Nile Region Police Spokesperson, described the deployment as a normal preventive measure based on intelligence reports about the planned protest.

Captain Edwin Mawanda, the West Nile region UPDF spokesperson, emphasized that the UPDF’s deployment aimed to support the police in maintaining law and order.

While some youth criticized the security measures, others appealed to the forces to join the fight against corruption.

President Yoweri Museveni had previously warned that demonstrators would not be allowed to proceed with their plans to march to Parliament to protest against corruption.
