SAD! Two children electrocuted to death in Masindi

She called on the authorities to arrest the workshop owner, noting that the mother had lost her only children due to what appears to be negligence.

Masindi: Residents of Southern Cell, in Central Division, Masindi Municipality, were left in shock after two children aged between 1 and 4 were electrocuted to death while playing near a furniture workshop.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday, September 15, 2025 at around 1:00 PM, near a workshop reportedly operated by a man identified only as Tom.

The deceased children were the only children of Kusemererwa Anita Juliet, a top class teacher at Asaba Nursery and Primary School in Masindi. Their identities were not available at press time.

According to Firidah Kahunde, a neighbor, she had taken her own children for a haircut when she encountered the landlady standing near the scene.

“I found the landlady standing near the children and she told me they had been electrocuted to death,” Kahunde explained.

She noted that the children frequently played in that area, but today’s tragic incident was caused by the connection of live electric wires to metallic structures at the workshop, which she strongly condemned.

Jovia Ayebale, another neighbor, said she was informed by bystanders about the electrocution and rushed to the scene. “We found the two children electrocuted, with the older one carrying the younger sibling on her back,” Ayebale said.

She called on the authorities to arrest the workshop owner, noting that the mother had lost her only children due to what appears to be negligence.

Jesca Balemesa, the bursar at Asaba School, confirmed that the school had been informed of the tragedy by a boda boda rider. She urged local authorities to gazette or regulate workshops in residential areas, stressing that the presence of such dangerous setups in homes is unsafe, especially for children.

Godfrey Musindi, the LC1 Chairperson of Southern Cell, confirmed that the tenant, Tom, had illegally connected electricity to the metallic door of his workshop, which resulted in the children’s electrocution.

“This is the first incident of this kind in our area. I warn all residents against illegally connecting electricity from meter boxes. We have lost innocent children who had bright futures,” he said.

Joseph Kariwani, the Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigations (OC CID) at Masindi Central Police Station, condemned the act and confirmed that investigations are underway to ensure justice is served.

Pensive Tukasiima, the District Police Commander (DPC) of Masindi, praised the residents for staying calm and asked them to continue cooperating with police.

“We appeal to the public not to take the law into their own hands. If anyone sees the suspect, do not lynch him report to the police immediately,” she urged.
