SAD! One dead as health ministry confirms Ebola outbreak in Uganda

The public is urged to remain vigilant, adhere to preventive health guidelines.

Kampala: The Ministry of Health has officially confirmed an outbreak of Sudan Ebola Virus Disease (SVD) in Kampala after positive test results from three National Reference Laboratories.

Addressing the media earlier today, Dr. Diana Atwine, the Permanent Secretary, provided details about the index case and the measures being implemented to contain the outbreak.

The confirmed case is a 32-year-old male nurse working at Mulago National Referral Hospital. He initially developed fever-like symptoms and sought treatment at multiple health facilities, including Saidina Abubakar Islamic Hospital in Matugga, Wakiso District and Mbale Regional Referral Hospital in Mbale City

The patient had been experiencing a five-day history of high fever, chest pain, and difficulty breathing, which later progressed to unexplained bleeding from multiple body sites.

Despite receiving medical care, he developed multi-organ failure and tragically passed away on January 29, 2025, at Mulago National Referral Hospital. Post-mortem tests confirmed Sudan Ebola Virus Disease as the cause of death.

At this time, no additional health workers or patients in the ward have shown symptoms of Ebola. However, the Ministry of Health has initiated precautionary measures to mitigate the risk of further transmission.

The public is urged to remain vigilant, adhere to preventive health guidelines, and report any suspected cases to health authorities immediately.
