SAD! Cleaner drowns in hotel swimming pool in Buliisa

“We had high hopes for him. He was young and hardworking,” Tumwesige added.

Buliisa: A tragic incident occurred at Western Sands Hotel, commonly known as Kasubi, in Buliisa town, where 21-year-old Oscar Asiimwe was found dead in the hotel’s swimming pool.

Asiimwe was a resident of Kityanga Cell in Buliisa Town Council, Buliisa District.

According to hotel sources, Asiimwe had entered the swimming pool before the unfortunate incident took place.

Junior Wamani, the deceased’s elder brother, recounted that he received a distressing phone call on Wednesday at around 8 p.m., summoning him urgently to the hotel.

“Upon arriving at the hotel, I found my younger brother’s lifeless body beside the swimming pool,” he narrated. He was informed that Asiimwe had attempted to swim but tragically drowned at around 5 p.m.

Wamani immediately reported the matter to Buliisa Central Police Station, prompting the police to visit the scene and transport the body to Buliisa General Hospital Mortuary for a postmortem examination.

Langton Tumwesige, the deceased’s grandfather, has raised concerns over the circumstances of Asiimwe’s death. He questioned why the family was informed three hours after the drowning occurred.

“We need clear answers about the death of our child. The incident happened at around 5 p.m., yet we were only informed at 8 p.m.,” he emphasized.

Tumwesige further lamented that despite the tragic incident, the hotel management has failed to take full responsibility for funeral expenses.

“They only contributed Shs350,000, which is insufficient for the burial costs,” he said.

He also appealed for fair compensation and payment of Asiimwe’s salary, as he had worked at the hotel for a month.

“We had high hopes for him. He was young and hardworking,” Tumwesige added.

Richard Katende, the Manager of Western Sands Hotel Buliisa, expressed his regret over the incident and assured that measures would be put in place to prevent similar occurrences.

“It is unfortunate that we lost one of our staff members. We are working closely with authorities to ensure such incidents do not happen in the future,” Katende stated.

Efforts to reach Julius Allan Hakiza, the Albertine Regional Police Spokesperson, for a comment were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
