Kagadi: Pupils and teachers of Merryland Primary School in Kanyabebe Sub-county, Kagadi District narrowly escaped death on Tuesday evening after a heavy downpour accompanied by strong winds brought down an incomplete classroom block.

The affected three-classroom structure, which was under construction by parents, was being used to accommodate Primary Three and Primary Four learners. The Primary Three class has 47 pupils, while Primary Four has 36.

According to the head teacher, Alinaitwe Godwin Benon, the walls and roof  which had been temporarily covered with tarpaulins collapsed during the storm, destroying desks, chairs, and tables.

Alinaitwe said learners and teachers acted swiftly when the rain intensified, evacuating the building and seeking shelter in Primary Five and Primary Six classrooms. Their quick response prevented injuries.
