Public warned of the dangers of improper food storage

Kampala: The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry, and Fisheries (MAAIF) has issued a warning to the public about the dangers of improper food storage and handling.
The Food and Nutrition Security Assistant Commissioner at MAAIF, Alex Bambona, says that the way people handle and store food can be a matter of life and death.
Bambona was officiating the closing ceremony of the half-day National Food Safety Dialogue organized by Caritas Uganda Farmers Common Voice Platform (UFCVP) on Thursday in Kampala.
The dialogue was under the theme of preparing for the unexpected, and it aims at educating stakeholders on food systems, food safety standards, policies, and regulatory frameworks in Uganda.
Bambona highlighted the common mistakes that people make when handling and storing food, such as keeping raw meat, poultry, and fish at room temperature for too long and drying food on floors and road sides, which attract dangerous toxins leading to food-borne illnesses, which can be especially dangerous for vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, and the elderly.
