Police post, detachments to be established at contested farmland in Mucwini

Kitgum: The Kitgum District Security Committee has resolved to establish a police station and military detachments at the contested farmlands in Mucwini.

This was disclosed by the Kitgum district Deputy RDC, Hajji Marijan Walire.

According to Hajji Marijan Walire, a police post with around 20 personnel and military detachments is expected to be established at the contested farmland in Mucwini in a bid to permanently end the seasonal land clashes between the communities of Okol and Chua.

He also added that the district has already written a letter to the Ministry of Internal Affairs seeking consideration and deployment, which they are expecting a reply to by the coming week.

Commissioner Marijan further said that the deadly Monday, July 1, 2024, attack saw four dead bodies and bodies have been recovered, although one identified as Oneka Francis is still missing to date.

Walire also warned and asked political leaders to withdraw and refrain from pushing the locals for war, and he further mentioned that the land at Mucwini is extensive and there is no need to fight over it. Instead, he advocated for peace, emphasizing that the conflicts have persisted for over a decade.

Recently, Bishop Ocan Robert Tubamoi of the Chosen Evangelical Revival Church has asked the community of Acholi, and specifically Kitgum, to use mediation as a better alternative to solve the rising land conflicts in the region.

Bishop Tubamoi told this publication that the rising land wrangles, with the most recent one at Mucwini, are due to the ignorance of the population, who are being manipulated by those with the potential to exploit the impoverished ones.
