Police nab two suspects for hijacking refugee food truck in Arua

“The four riders dashed into the bushes, but two were arrested,” Angucia said.

Arua: Police in Arua have arrested two suspected highway robbers accused of hijacking a truck loaded with refugee aid food.

The incident occurred around midnight on November 6 at Kamukamu Trading Center along the Arua-Nebbi road.

The suspects have been identified as Asara Godwin, 18, from Ananjara Village, Ajia Sub-County and Sabute Brian, 21, from Ocoko Village, Ajia Sub-County

According to SSP Josephine Angucia, West Nile Police Public Relations Officer, the truck driver, Abdul Aziz, 27, from Kyengera in Kampala, reported the attack while transporting food supplies to Palorinya Refugee Settlement.

“The suspects, armed with machetes, tried to flag down his truck. When he kept driving, they jumped onto the moving vehicle and began throwing bags of posho onto the road,” Angucia said.

She added that the driver attempted to brake, but the robbers threatened to slash him with machetes, forcing him to call police. The suspects then fled into nearby bushes.

Police, led by the Arua Vurra DPC, combed the area from midnight until 4:30 a.m., and at 6:00 a.m., they intercepted a Toyota Harrier (plate UAW 012A) carrying four stolen bags of posho.

“The four riders dashed into the bushes, but two were arrested,” Angucia said.

A motorcycle used in the crime has been impounded and is currently held at Arua Rural Police Station in Odumi.

The suspects are now in custody while investigations continue. Angucia warned that these bandits often target slow-moving trucks along the bumpy Nebbi-Arua road, particularly during holidays.

“With new patrols, police aim to intensify surveillance and ensure that all criminals are brought to justice,” she said.

The hijacking adds to a recent string of highway robberies along the Nebbi-Arua road, where travelers have lost goods and money to armed gangs.
