Police block access to Bunyoro Kingdom Headquarters amid leadership dispute

Byakutaga has resisted this, labeling the interim appointment as "illegal."

Hoima: Security forces, led by the Uganda Police, have blocked access to the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom headquarters along Rukurato Road, diverting traffic on both sides.

This measure comes shortly after King Solomon Gafabusa Iguru I was airlifted to Kampala for medical treatment.

Albertine Region Police Spokesperson, Julius Allan Hakiza, emphasized that the deployment is a routine security precaution to maintain law and order, assuring residents that there is no cause for alarm.

“This is just normal security provision,” Hakiza stated, adding that police have been stationed at the kingdom’s premises due to ongoing leadership conflicts.

The situation has been tense following the expiration of Prime Minister Andrew Byakutaga’s contract, which ended last year but was extended to June this year. Currently, Byakutaga is operating without a cabinet.

The conflict escalated when Chief Prince Eng. Fred Mugenyi appointed an interim prime minister, asking Byakutaga to vacate the office. Byakutaga has resisted this, labeling the interim appointment as “illegal.”

Hakiza noted that the police are prepared to handle any potential chaos, stating, “We had to deploy security because we anticipated trouble due to the leadership dispute. We will not tolerate any chaotic behavior at the palace.”

While police are committed to maintaining order, Hakiza clarified that their role is to ensure the kingdom officials can carry out their duties without interference or violence.
