Terego: A total of 32 candidates who passed division one in Terego district in the 2023 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE) have been rewarded.
Of those who were rewarded, 27 are boys and 5 are girls. They received scholastic materials from the district Woman Member of Parliament, Rose Obigah.
The scholastic materials received include mattresses, books, school metallic cases, mathematical sets, pens, pencils, and rulers.
At the function that took place at Terego district headquarters in Leju town council, Rose Obigah, the Woman Member of Parliament for Terego district, advised the learners to be ambassadors of Terego in terms of education.
Obigah also advised them to plant more than 100 tree species to curb environmental issues and avoid bush burning, which is leaving the ground bare and thus causing soil erosion.
She, however, asked the community members to desist from bush burning and charcoal burning, which are contributing to deforestation.
The legislator, however, cautioned the parents to protect their children from non-education lovers who end up destroying their future, especially the girls who are impregnated by those who have failed in education and want to fail others as well.
She also advised the boy child to desist from bad practices and concentrate on education so that their future could be bright.
Wilfred Saka, the LC5 chairperson for Terego, asked all the stakeholders to join hands and improve education in Terego.
Saka thanked the woman Member of Parliament for the initiative of supporting the learners, which she has done every year since she assumed office.
She asked other leaders to emulate the same and improve academic performance.
Meanwhile, Godfrey Mugaara, the education project officer at Windle International, working in the rhino camp, says they have set strategies for engaging learners in continuous assessment exams to make sure they improve the results.
He says the biggest challenge, especially in refugee camps, is the new arrivals, who are just adapting to the Ugandan curriculum.
He says they have also faced the challenge of teachers who go for government jobs, thus demotivating learners.
He says they are ready to coordinate with the education stakeholders and also have mentorship for learners with external examiners.
Terego district registered over 5,000 candidates to sit for the 2023 final examinations.
Out of this, 32 passed in division one, of which 27 are boys and 5 are girls; 2205 passed in division two, of which 1074 are boys and 1131 are girls; 1607 passed in division three, of which 1007 were boys and 600 were girls.
In division four, Terego district registered 754 people, of whom 509 were boys and 245 were girls.
Meanwhile, 1064 were ungraded, of which 562 were boys and 502 were girls.
171 candidates did not sit for the examinations.
Obigah says there is a need for all the stakeholders to join hands and work together with the education fraternity so that they can change the results of poor performance.
Over 100 pupils have benefited from the scholastic materials since 2021, when she was elected as the first woman member of parliament in Terego district.
