This issue has drawn considerable attention due to its impact on the functioning of the health center and the security of patients' belongings.
Rubanda: The rising theft of patients’ belongings and facility equipment at Rubaare Health Centre IV has raised concerns among patients, caretakers, and health workers, highlighting the need for urgent intervention.
Dr. John Wickliff Barinda, the facility in charge, acknowledged the ongoing theft after receiving multiple complaints from patients and caretakers.
According to Dr. Barinda, the theft primarily occurs in the patients’ wards, where personal items such as mattresses, blankets, clothes, money, and phones are being stolen.
In an exclusive interview with ugreports.co.ug, Dr. Barinda confirmed that patients themselves have been involved in stealing mattresses and blankets from the facility, while some also steal from one another.
This issue has drawn considerable attention due to its impact on the functioning of the health center and the security of patients’ belongings.
To address this issue, the facility has implemented several measures, including thorough checks of discharged patients and their caretakers. Additionally, the health center now collects contact details from patients and caretakers for security purposes.
There are also plans to take photos of patients and confiscate their National IDs when they are provided with facility blankets, in order to help minimize theft and improve security within the wards.
Mr. Fred Muhweezi, the chairperson of the Health Unit Management Committee, echoed Dr. Barinda’s concerns, stressing the need for serious attention to this issue.
He warned that if the theft continues unchecked, the health facility may run out of essential equipment, which would significantly affect the care and services provided to admitted patients.
