Nyabyeya Forestry College targets production of one million tree seedlings annually

Masindi: Nyabyeya Forestry College, located in Masindi District, has embarked on an ambitious initiative to produce over one million tree seedlings annually to support environmental conservation and combat the effects of climate change.
Richard Kisaye, the college principal, revealed that three hectares of land have been dedicated to a nursery bed, designed exclusively for cultivating indigenous tree species.
Kisaye emphasized that these trees, if embraced by the community, would not only conserve the environment but also generate revenue for the institution.
The college’s nursery currently cultivates over 50 indigenous tree species, including Muvule and Mahogany, which are increasingly threatened by high timber demand. These species are chosen for their superior environmental benefits compared to exotic alternatives.
Lukato Denis, Forestry Officer at Nyabyeya, highlighted that the nursery’s primary goal is conservation. “Producing one million seedlings per year will help preserve the environment while enhancing community livelihoods,” Denis explained.
To diversify conservation efforts, the college has allocated 18 hectares for bamboo plantations and introduced a diploma course in bamboo growing. This initiative aims to promote sustainable land use while offering economic benefits to local communities.
The college is employing other innovative strategies to reduce deforestation and promote environmental awareness:
According to Waniala Benindictor, Lecturer, biomass technology has been introduced to local communities, reducing dependence on tree-cutting for fuel.
Bwambale Uzeya, Assistant Lecturer in Beekeeping, noted that planting fruit trees for apiaries not only supports pollination but also encourages reforestation and biodiversity.
Established in Mayuge District in 1932 and relocated to Nyabyeya in 1948, Nyabyeya Forestry College initially offered a two-year certificate program in forestry.
Over time, the college expanded its curriculum to include diploma programs in forestry, agroforestry, beekeeping, biomass technologies, and bamboo cultivation, addressing modern environmental challenges while fostering sustainable forest management.
This holistic approach underscores the college’s commitment to combating climate change, conserving biodiversity, and empowering local communities economically.
