Ntungamo PDM, Emyooga leaders face arrest for swindling funds

Ntungamo: Three Parish Development Model (PDM) SACCO leaders in Ntungamo are facing arrest for allegedly swindling funds meant for beneficiaries and demanding bribes during loan processing.

The accused include Abenaitwe Augustine, the PDM chairperson for Kayenje parish; Kwega Aramathan from Rukanga parish; and Remigio Tumwiine, the chairperson of Boda Boda Emyooga SACCO in Ruhaama main county.

The Ntungamo deputy resident district commissioner, Mrs. Rosemary Atuheire, told this publication that she ordered their arrest for allegedly swindling money meant for beneficiaries and asking for bribes from beneficiaries to process their loans.

‘’Some Emyooga SACCO leaders had distributed money between themselves, leaving out members like the Ruhaama Boda Boda SACCO, while PDM leaders were giving out lists of beneficiaries not selected by members but also asking members for money to work on their files, yet the government was facilitating them to do so,’’ she added.

The presidential representative asserted that these leaders were handed over to the police after failing to return the misappropriated funds, and the investigation was prompted by complaints from beneficiaries who accused the leaders of unfair practices.

While some Emyoga SACCO leaders allegedly distributed money among themselves, PDM leaders provided lists of beneficiaries not chosen by members and requested additional fees for file processing.

The government has recovered over UGX 100 million this year, and Ntungamo district received UGX 2.5 billion for distribution across 238 parishes.

Such cases highlight the importance of transparency and accountability in financial management within SACCOs and other community-based organizations.
