NRM flagbearer accused of assaulting PM Nabbanja released on bail

“I am focused on revitalizing service delivery in Bugangaizi East. I will not be intimidated by political opportunists,” he said.

Kibaale: The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flagbearer for Bugangaizi East County, Onesmas Twinamasiko, has been released on bail after spending one week in Kibaale Prison. He was released on Wednesday, September 10, 2025.

He faces charges of assault and causing bodily harm to the Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja.

According to the prosecution, the alleged incident took place on July 17, 2025, during the announcement of the NRM primary election results at the party offices in Kakumiro District.

A scuffle reportedly broke out, during which Twinamasiko allegedly assaulted Prime Minister Nabbanja in front of several party supporters.

Appearing before the Kibaale Chief Magistrate’s Court, Twinamasiko pleaded not guilty to the charges. His legal counsel, Martin Nibyona of Ambrose Tibyasa Firm & Advocates, submitted a bail application on his behalf.

Chief Magistrate Nazifer Namayanja granted Twinamasiko a non-cash bail of UGX 500,000. His three sureties were bonded UGX 1 million each  non-cash. They included; Joseph Sentayi, the LC5 Chairperson for Kakumiro District, Lawrence Bazara, the District Councillor for Kakindo Town Council and Moses Twimukye, the LC3 Chairperson for Kisiita Town Council.

In her ruling, Magistrate Namayanja noted that the accused had presented credible sureties, and that the court was satisfied with the conditions provided. She ordered Twinamasiko to reappear in Kakumiro Court on October 2, 2025, for the hearing of the case.

After his release, Twinamasiko addressed a cheering crowd and local media, reaffirming his political mission.

“I am focused on revitalizing service delivery in Bugangaizi East. I will not be intimidated by political opportunists,” he said.

His lawyer, Martin Nibyona, dismissed the charges as politically motivated, arguing that they are aimed at derailing Twinamasiko’s efforts to serve the people.

“These charges are baseless. They are only meant to frustrate his leadership journey,” Nibyona stated.

Meanwhile, Kakumiro District LC5 Chairperson, Joseph Sentayi, who also stood as a surety for Twinamasiko, condemned ongoing political wrangles among top leaders in the district. He urged unity and called for peaceful coexistence among leaders despite political differences.
