NDA recovers stolen government drugs, closes 59 drug shops in West Nile

Some of the assorted medicines had been stolen from the government facilities.

Maracha: The National Drug Authority (NDA) has impounded 151 boxes of assorted drugs worth 40 million shillings and closed 59 drug shops that were operating illegally in West Nile.

The Drug Authority has been conducting operations in the region.

This has been done in a one-week operation that has been conducted in the West Nile districts of Arua, Maracha, Koboko, Yumbe, and Obongi.

According to Dr. Emmanuel Omirambe, the West Nile Regional Inspector of Drugs, the drug outlets were operating without license or with unqualified personnel.

He says the operation is in line with the mandate of national drug authorities to protect and promote public health.

Dr. Omirambe says a six-month period is given to the owners of the drug shops to come and reclaim the drugs and fill out the necessary requirements, like the processing of the license, among others.

Tom Makumbi, the senior inspector of drugs at the National Drug Authority (Medicines Regulatory Agency) in Uganda, says Koboko and Obongi districts had the highest volumes of impounded medicines.

According to Makumbi, they closed illegal facilities operated by quack doctors, and most of the drugs were stolen from government hospitals.

He says some drugs recovered are from other neighboring countries, such as the Democratic Republic of the Congo and South Sudan.
