Musingo takes helm at UWEC as its new head

The development has been welcomed by conservationists and stakeholders.

Entebbe: In a historic move, the Uganda Government has merged Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre (UWEC-Entebbe Zoo) and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) into a single entity, effective October 1, 2024. This rationalization aims to enhance efficiency and conservation efforts.

Dr. James Musinguzi, former UWEC Executive Director, has been reassigned to UWA Headquarters as Director Community Conservation and Captive Wildlife Services.

Meanwhile, Mr. David Musingo has been appointed Head of the newly created UWEC Conservation Area, encompassing former UWEC, Entebbe Botanical Gardens, and Regional Satellite Wildlife Conservation Education Centres (Zoos).

“I’m honored to build upon Dr. Musinguzi’s remarkable legacy,” Mr. Musingo said. “We’ll continue revitalizing UWEC, ensuring it remains a premier conservation, tourism, and education hub.”

Under Dr. Musinguzi’s leadership, UWEC was ranked East, Central, and West Africa’s best zoo by the Pan African Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

Mr. Musingo pledged to enhance community engagement and conservation efforts, strengthen partnerships with stakeholders, enhance captive wildlife management, and promote conservation education, research, and tourism.

“UWEC’s success is a testament to Dr. Musinguzi’s vision,” said Mr. Musingo. “I’m committed to taking it to greater heights.”

UWA’s merger is expected to streamline operations, improve resource allocation, and amplify Uganda’s conservation voice globally.

“This merger marks a new chapter in Uganda’s wildlife conservation journey,” said a UWA spokesperson. “We’re confident Mr. Musingo will excel in his new role.”

The development has been welcomed by conservationists and stakeholders.

“David Musingo’s appointment is a well-deserved recognition of his dedication to conservation,” said a UWEC staff member.

As UWEC Conservation Area embarks on this new journey, Mr. Musingo’s leadership is poised to forge a brighter future for Uganda’s wildlife.
