Mugisa challenges Akugizibwe’s victory in court

“Victory belongs to the electorate, not an individual,” Mugisa said, alleging that some of his supporters were affected during the election process.

Masindi: Julius Mugisa, an independent candidate in the 2026 general elections for Buruli County in Masindi District, has petitioned the High Court challenging the victory of Ronald Akugizibwe Aled.

According to the Electoral Commission, Akugizibwe, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, was declared winner with 13,321 votes, while Mugisa came second with 11,087 votes.

Other candidates in the race included Zacheus Mwetegya, Patrick Ongei, Fred Barongo, Ismail Nyakojo, and Fredrick Banage Bitamale, who trailed.

While addressing the media on Friday at Victory Bijja Hotel in Masindi, Mugisa revealed that he filed an election petition through M/S Mwesigwa Rukutana and Company Advocates, citing alleged irregularities in the January polls.

He said the petition, filed at the Masindi High Court, seeks to nullify the declared results, adding that he has sufficient evidence and is confident of winning the case.

Mugisa noted that both Akugizibwe and the Electoral Commission have been named in the petition, arguing that the declaration of the winner was unlawful due to electoral irregularities.

He emphasized that the court will determine the rightful winner, adding that his decision to petition was influenced by his supporters and other stakeholders.

“Victory belongs to the electorate, not an individual,” Mugisa said, alleging that some of his supporters were affected during the election process.

He also called for unity among voters, stressing that communities should not be divided by politics.

“We should not be divided over politics. We may have different ideologies, but we remain one people,” he added.

Stephen Kabindi, who stepped down in support of Mugisa, expressed confidence in the court process, saying they hope justice will prevail.

“There were many irregularities in the January elections, and we are optimistic that justice will be served because our victory was robbed,” Kabindi said.
